'Drawn To The Flames' is an original, completely handmade linocut print which has been designed and printed in Devon, UK.

This print is a Limited Edition run of only 40 prints, which means once they are sold out, no more will be made and the printing block will be retired. Each one is titled, numbered, and signed by me. Each print also includes my 'chop mark' or traditional signature stamp. The design is printed onto beautiful white Japanese paper.

'Drawn To The Flames' references the idiom, "like a moth to a flame" where it is well-known the attraction that moths have to bright lights - both one as harmless as lamplight, but also as dangerous as firelight. The phrase was first used to emphasise a type of allure that, though seemingly familiar or irresistibly inviting, might instead be harmful.

There is an early reference to this phrase in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, c. 1596:

Thus hath the candle singed the moth.
O these deliberate fools! When they do choose,
They have the wisdom by their wit to lose.

The light source in this design is in fact a Victorian oil-lamp; a beautiful but fragile creation which was both vital in the households of the 19th and early 20th centuries, but also a source of danger if used improperly.

Important: I cannot choose a particular edition number for you at request, or guarantee that your printed item will be the exact one shown in the example photographs in the shop. As everything is handmade, there will inevitably be some slight variations with each printing; likewise coloured prints with hand-mixed inks may vary slightly in pigment between batches. This is all part of the charm and uniqueness of your purchase, as no two items will be exactly the same! If the paper has been cut or torn by hand, please also expect very minor differences in size.
