An original, completely handmade linocut print which has been designed and printed in Devon, UK.

This print is the third (2024) pressing of a Limited Edition run of only 25 prints, which means once they are sold out, no more will be made. Each one is titled, numbered, and signed by me. The design is hand-printed in grassy green ink onto beautiful Japanese Ho-Sho paper.

'Tinners' Hares and Rowan' is based on the magical three hares motif, which has existed in various forms since the 7th century. It has been depicted in China, The Middle East, Europe, and, most uniquely, as an architectural feature to many Devon churches not far from where I live - and from where my inspiration was originally piqued. There’s also a claim that the local Devon tin-miners —who helped repair and fund the churches— also adopted the three hares symbol as a sign of their patronage, thus, the Tinners’ Hares!

Through being joined at the ears, these hares assign themselves to threefold rotational symmetry, which references Celtic triskelions and has ancient connotations to fertility, the lunar cycle, and —if viewed in a Christian context— the Holy Trinity.

I also chose to include sprigs from the Rowan, a protective and courageous tree symbolic of the cyclical journey of death & regeneration/rebirth.

DIMENSIONS:
Printed image size: 6.5" diameter approx.
Total size (incl. paper): 10" x 10"

Important: I cannot choose a particular edition number for you at request, or guarantee that your printed item will be the exact one shown in the example photographs in the shop. As everything is handmade, there will inevitably be some slight variations with each printing; likewise coloured prints with hand-mixed inks may vary slightly in pigment between batches. This is all part of the charm and uniqueness of your purchase, as no two items will be exactly the same! If the paper has been cut or torn by hand, please also expect very minor differences in size.
