An original, completely handmade linocut print which has been designed and printed in Devon, UK. Available in black ink, or hand-painted with watercolour.

'The Devil's Stone' print tells the folktale of Shebbear village, in Devon. There are a couple of versions of the legend, one being that on Guy Fawkes' Night, the stone was dropped upon the devil during a fight with the archangel Michael, pinning him beneath. It supposedly takes 365 days for the devil to crawl out from under the stone, and so it is turned every November 5th by the church bellringers to ensure he is trapped again for another year.

The stone itself is a glacial erratic (i.e, it is not local to the region), which itself adds another layer of mystery: one such lore suggests that the devil threw the stone at the local church - but missed!

This print is a First Limited Edition of 10. Each one is titled and signed by me. The design is printed  in black onto beautiful Japanese Kitakata paper, which has been hand-torn and so features at least one deckled edge.

    DIMENSIONS:
Printed image size: 3.5" diameter approx.
Total size (incl. paper): 5.5" x 5.5" approx.
    The print/s are unmounted.

Important: I cannot guarantee that your printed item will be the exact one shown in the example photographs in the shop. As everything is handmade, there will inevitably be some slight variations with each printing; likewise coloured prints with hand-mixed inks may vary slightly in pigment between batches. This is all part of the charm and uniqueness of your purchase, as no two items will be exactly the same! If the paper has been cut or torn by hand, please also expect very minor differences in size.
